The sky and the floor are electric with paint involves a 'test bedding' of the idea of the gallery as studio, taking as its starting point fragments from Joshua Uvieghara’s studio, and comprised of materials, ideas, objects, articles and strands that are current to his practice as an artist, teacher and collaborator. These elements will serve as clues and instructions, becoming starting points for a process of participation in the gallery over the course of four weeks. The project is intended to provoke responses and interpretations that orbit between Joshua’s studio practice and a collective experience in which the public and a range of communities and artists are invited to participate. As artist and facilitator, Joshua sees art as a vehicle for questioning hierarchies between the 'expert' and 'novice' and challenging oppositions between 'thinking' and 'doing'.
Joshua Uvieghara is an artist based at Phoenix Brighton. The exhibition will develop over several weeks and visitors are encouraged to return several times in order to experience the evolution of the space.
