SPOTLIGHT is the regular series in which Phoenix artists showcase their work and artistic practice. Join us for an evening of creative discussion and stimulating insights.
In a collaborative practice dating from 2002, Jon Carritt and Dan Palmer have blown smoke rings at each other, stepped out of an empty taxi, sung their own back catalogue, sent a floral apology, trodden on each other's toes and donated their home produced wine to a private view. In Spotlight, Jon and Dan will be asking each other about the nature of their collaboration, where ideas come from, how things get made. They will be considering what might be the recurring concerns, strategies and visual characteristics of a practice that continually tries out one thing after another.
The stonework spiral on a Victorian building, reproductions of Renaissance art, barely identifiable relatives posing stiffly in ancient family photographs: with a decent camera and scanner these can become material for a fantastic reworking of reality. It's the unpredictable scope and the multiplying possibilities that appeal to Karen Barratt. Collage combines an intended effect with an accidental one: images chosen to express one idea prompt unexpected diverse associations. Photoshop enables her to make pictures that rework fragments of meaning into new stories.
