Online Portrait Drawing & Painting

Allan Ramsay is delighted to be able to offer you an opportunity to join his class online! This course will introduce participants to drawing and painting portraits and is suitable for beginners. The course will provide an understanding of basic anatomy and the methods, techniques and ways of looking needed to create a likeness. Allan will provide photographs of portrait models for you to work from. The course runs for six weeks. The first half will focus on drawing and the second half will focus on painting with acrylics.

The course will be delivered via Zoom, each session will begin and end via a group chat. Throughout the session members of the group will be able to post comments, ask questions and share images of their work via Zoom. Allan will provide one to one feedback as you work on your drawings. Once signed up, you will be sent instructions on how to join the Zoom meeting and information about the structure of each session.

Zoom

In order to take part in the course you will need to make sure you have the following in place:

  • Internet connection
  • A laptop/computer/smart phone/device with the camera enabled
  • An email address to receive the link to the Zoom group chat (you don’t need a login)

You can use a laptop or computer to access Zoom on a larger scale than a smart phone or device. You can find out more about this online platform here: Zoom

You will need the following materials to take part in this course:

  • Acrylic paint
  • Brushes
  • Thick cartridge paper
  • Charcoal
  • Pencils

A full materials list will be provided in advance of the course. You will also need a quiet corner in which to work.

Allan has exhibited regularly at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He is a 1st prizewinner of the John Player Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, London (now the BP Portrait Awards). He has held portrait drawing and painting classes at The National Portrait Gallery, London, Glasgow Museums and Galleries, Glasgow School of Art and Wimbledon School of Art. He has completed portrait commissions for numerous institutions including the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge and The National Portrait Gallery, London. Allan holds a studio at Phoenix Art Space.
