Experimental Embroidered Textile Art

Kate Strachan
£70

Explore a variety of surface design techniques such as appliqué, embroidery and drawing with a sewing machine to create textile compositions. You will take design inspiration from the shapes and textures of natural forms and using found and collected materials.

You will be encouraged to play and experiment with different fibres and fabrics and led through a variety of techniques. After initial experiments with materials and design, you will be able to combine and assemble your own chosen materials and work towards a final piece or pieces of embroidered textile art.

Suitable for all levels including beginners, no previous experience necessary.

Students need to bring the following:

  • A basic sewing kit, e.g.: scissors (1 large and 1 small & pointed), pins, needles, thread.
  • Any fabrics / fibres / design inspiration that you would like to incorporate in your work.

Red Room, Phoenix Art Space

You will also be asked to source fabrics for your final designs. The tutor will provide a sewing machine to share, plus a basic kit of haberdashery / equipment but if you have a sewing machine please bring it along.

Kate joined Phoenix Art Space in 2008 and was previously a member of Red Herring studios. During this time she has worked freelance in a variety of media as a designer and maker, including costume and set design, textiles, youth/community projects, residencies, teaching, and corporate events. Kate currently teaches fashion, textiles and printmaking part time and produces her own pieces using mainly vintage fabrics or linen and makes limited edition silkscreen prints on textiles and paper.
