Artist of the Month: August 2018
1. How long have you been at Phoenix?
I’ve been lucky enough to have a studio at Phoenix for 5/6 years. It’s such a inspiring space with loads of talented artists. It's exciting times at Phoenix right now!
2. What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I’m working on a shop window display at Baroque Bespoke Jewellery in the Lanes. It's a great opportunity as I get to showcase my creatures and sell them. I’m also working on a few private commissions, from making monkeys to magpies. Also I’m getting my paintings ready to start my new hand embroidery project. “Where Volcanics meet the sea" and a protest project.
3. Which media do you like to use?
I use mainly vintage fabrics and thread but always looking for different materials and I like the idea of using rough gem stones in my embroidery. And... I think I need a tufting gun! Oh and a heat press.
4. Which other artists do you admire?
There’s loads, but I do like the humour and intelligence of Miranda July, Jeremy Deller and Grayson Perry. Also Peter Doig , Jules de Balincourt, Jenny Saville and so many great artists I’m discovering on Instagram daily .
5. What would you recommend to go see?
I recently went to see the summer exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts. Well worth a visit, but ends 19th August. And I always like to pop by the Grant Museum of Zoology in Bloomsbury, London .
It has the one of the oldest natural history collections in the UK don't you know!
6. What work are you most proud of?
I’m not proud of one piece of work in particular. I am proud of them all whilst working on them, which fades a little as I start my next project.
