About the Event

May and June mark the sad anniversaries of the George Floyd murder and the Grenfell Tower disaster. 22 June is also Windrush Day. These 3 critical moments in our recent social history and the global pandemic highlight just some of the devastating injustices and inequities that are still rife in society today. The OXYGEN exhibition invites creative responses by communities impacted by these incidents, with themes exploring the trauma caused by life-limiting conditions – inequality, injustice, oppression, marginalisation, racism, displacement and social exclusion. Guest artists include: Judith Ricketts, Josef Cabey, River Sweeney and AFLO the Poet.

OXYGEN is curated by Jenni Lewin-Turner of urbanflo and funded by Centre for Arts and Wellbeing at the University of Brighton and Phoenix Art Space.

From 16 June – 25 July, the galleries at Phoenix Art Space will be open Thursday – Sunday, 13.00 – 17.00. Visitors must pre-book a free, timed slot in advance of their visit. Only a limited number of people are allowed into our building so it’s essential that all visitors book. Check back here in June for a booking link.
