ABOUT

Kate Strachan
I’m an artist, designer and teacher based in Brighton, a studio member of Phoenix Art Space and regular exhibitor and host of Artist Open Houses. I teach textiles and printmaking courses locally including at Phoenix – see this terms brochure for details. For many years I’ve used pots and domestic objects as subjects for screen prints on textiles and paper, and more recently Still Life paintings.

Shapes with Edges and the Spaces Between
These works are primarily an investigation of familiar objects and how they exist in a composition in relation to each other. Becoming abstracted interpretations of shape, form, light and perspective.

Working in a variety of mediums allows me to investigate different approaches to capturing this ‘conversation’ between objects. Painting in acrylic has an immediacy in the decision making and investigates the qualities of texture and gesture. Screen Printing has a more composed, layered approach, and I’ve recently found a combination of cut stencils and painting directly onto the screen with mono print is a more spontaneous approach.

Collage is the thread between screen printing and painting, some exist as finished pieces, but I’m always using cut paper stencils for designs or playing with composition in paintings by ‘sketching’ with cut shapes and blocks of colour.
