REDEVELOPMENT VISION

The vision it to create a landmark arts building that reflects the spirit and vibrancy of the city. It will deliver improved facilities for artists making work, for the public to participate in the contemporary visual arts and will contribute to the continued growth and vibrancy of Brighton’s creative industries.

 

GROUND FLOOR PLAN

The scheme includes a redevelopment of the ground floor including improving the gallery, creating an artists' shop and cafe/bar, enhanced education facilities and a new commercial letting space for arts businesses.

GALLERY

Our aspiration is to create Brighton’s most flexible exhibition space with a greatly enhanced technical specification and the ability to respond to the needs of different artists and art forms.

FOYER AND SHOP

The shop will sell a range of studio artists’ work including paintings, prints, cards, photographs, ceramics and jewellery. This will be augmented by artists’ supplies and art works and items relating to specific exhibitions.

The cafe/bar will become the hub of the ground floor; a meeting place for artists and for the public.

The workshop spaces will be multi-purpose with black-out facilities, projection facilities, their own secure storage space and improved acoustic performance.

COMMERCIAL LETTING

There will be new office spaces for arts organisations. This will allow us to bring new rental income into the organisation, as well as helping to support dynamic young businesses and creative practitioners and integrating them into the creative community of Phoenix artists. 

 

EXTERNAL WORKS

Focusing in on the new entrance, we want to open the building out so that it actively invites people off the street to discover Phoenix for themselves.

FACADE SCHEME

In terms of the front of the building we are currently looking at different colour treatments of which this is an example produced by our architects. The new design references the adjoining regency architecture and has steel ribbons descending the building which also provide horizontal shading fins at the back and vertical shading fins at the front as well as offering opportunities to light the building at night.

COSTS AND TIMESCALE

The cost of the redevelopment is estimated at £3 million and the work will be phased over 4 years.
