Opportunities - Residences

About The Programme:

Phoenix Brighton has developed a visiting artist programme with the aim of providing national and international artists with the opportunity to develop work within the environment of a large arts organisation. The residencies are usually process-based enabling artists to develop work and tryout ideas in response to a new environment without the pressure of necessarily producing a finished exhibition.

Visiting artists are encouraged to network with other artists and organisations in the South East as a means of establishing a mutual exchange of ideas through practice.

Phoenix Brighton has also been able to send studio artists abroad in our exchange programmes. The focus of the exchange residencies is to broaden reciprocal awareness of the artists’ working practice. Cultural exchange between organisations and individuals can foster chains for future collaborations that outlive the length of the residency often spawning new professional and personal networks.

In line with Phoenix Brighton’s ethos the projects are publicly accessible in some shape or form, involving talks or presentations. Residencies help to broaden understanding of the thinking and making processes of artists, and enables artists to have direct, challenging and productive interaction with their audiences.

Applying for a residency at Phoenix Brighton:

We have a project space at Phoenix which is used as a studio during residencies. Phoenix is not regularly funded so to enable us to have artists in residence we must fundraise for each project, including living expenses and accommodation.

We send out a call for proposals when we have residency projects.

We are interested in hearing from organisations in the UK or internationally who would like to collaborate in and exchange programme.

Individual Artists can propose a project to Phoenix, please make sure you include the following:

  • What is your project
  • Why is it specific to Brighton or the surrounding area
  • Duration
  • Public engagement
  • How will the project be funded / include budget
  • Details about you, past work, web site
