ARTIST IN RESIDENCE: STEFAN HOFFMANN

3 July - 8 August
Dutch artist Stefan Hoffmann realises ‘on site’ projects using silkscreen printing directly onto various surfaces, including windows, walls and billboards. Drawing upon imagery including pictograms, medical illustrations and 17th century emblem books, he incorporates visual elements found around the working location. Every project involves a gradual evolution of imagery through the combining of new and existing screens, allowing the public to follow the creative process over time. Over the course of his residency Hoffmann will create a window/wallprinting piece for the south gallery which visitors will be able to observe as it develops.  Further information about the artist can be found at: www.stefanhoffmann.nl

ON SITE: WINDOW AND WALL PRINTING 2 Day WORKSHOP WITH STEFAN HOFFMANN
Try your hand at vertical wall and window printing techniques with a master printer. Demonstrations and talks will accompany a live project in which you will use screens with images prepared beforehand by Hoffmann to print directly onto paper and other surfaces in the building. No prior experience necessary.

MEET THE ARTIST, GET THE T-SHIRT!
Saturday 7 August, 11 am - 3 pm in the south gallery, free

At the conclusion of Hoffmann’s residency, visitors are invited to meet the artist, and to bring in an article of clothing onto which he will stencil an image.

Sue Gollifer , the artistic curator of the project, has invited curators from nine countries to select printed works from some of the most innovative contemporary printmakers in the field. Hot Plate focuses on installation and unframed work, seeking to position prints as objects and site-specific pieces. A number of the artists have moved away from the wall all together, using new materials, substrates and applications such as cloth, synthetic paper and metal. By approaching contemporary printmaking in the widest possible way, Hot Plate sparks a lively conversation about process, technique and technology within a continuously evolving area of the visual arts. Here the emphasis is on testing the perceived boundaries of the medium, breaking out of the literal and metaphorical ‘frame’ and exploring new formats which actively engage with the gallery space. It also opens up the possibilities for prints to move beyond the gallery walls and engage with modern street culture.
