Phoenix Brighton

peace paper(3)_w

FREE drop-in workshop with Drew Matott and Margaret Mahan. Suitable for all ages. Short presentations at 11 am and 1.30 pm

Presented by Phoenix Brighton as part of the Brighton Science Festival

Come along to Phoenix Brighton and try your hand at making paper out of old clothes. As part of their European tour, American artists/activists Drew Matott and Margaret Mahan will be stopping over in Brighton with their paper pulper and expertise to show us how it’s done. Throughout the day there will be opportunities to transform pulp into paper and also learn a bit about the technology of papermaking and the fascinating back story to the Peace Paper Project.

This workshop builds on their previous workshop at Phoenix Brighton in 2009 entitled “Conflict Paper” which worked with survivors of the Troubles pulping flags, uniforms and other clothing, as part of the “Fabric of War” exhibition. The artists work in collaboration with art therapists, universities, art centres, and community participants to establish systems of papermaking as self-expression and trauma intervention, and will discuss and share ideas around their practice throughout the day.

Margaret Mahan, BA is a contributor to Hand Papermaking Newsletter and directs Panty Pulping. Drew Matott received his MFA in Book and Paper Arts from Columbia College Chicago, and has worked internationally developing papermaking as social action programs. Mahan and Matott created Peace Paper Project as a way of engaging vulnerable populations with the empowering processes of hand papermaking.
