ABOUT

Our annual Community Takeover exhibition is back this autumn. Once again our gallery is transformed into a dedicated space for our community projects to be celebrated and all our visitors to contribute to an evolving exhibition. Our theme this time is ‘stories’ as we look back at recent narratives and invite you to share your stories with us.

View artwork produced by residents from East Brighton, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean and Hangleton & Knoll during the Our Place project as part of Brighton Festival in May this year, and learn more about this ground-breaking community initiative. Phoenix studio artists Ottilie Hainsworth and Jenny Staff were Our Place artists in residence and worked with local people in these areas to come up with creative responses to the Brighton Festival 2021 theme of ‘care’. Watch 2 Metre Conversations, a series of short films commissioned by Phoenix Art Space, the University of Brighton’s Centre for Art and Wellbeing and supported by Brighton and Hove City Council. Created by artist Katy Beinart and filmmaker John Edwards and shot during the initial lockdown period in 2020, these moving and powerful conversations with local people from a wide range of backgrounds show the diversity of experience during the pandemic.

Come along and tell us your stories through activities such as window drawings, adding to our forest of books and creating fabric decorations for our willow enclosure. Everyone is invited to take part in one of our artist-led workshops with Ottilie Hainsworth and Jenny Staff,  or visit the exhibition as it unfolds. Find out more about our community programme.

Join us at the exhibition preview on Friday 3 September, 15.00 – 19.00. Find out more.

Visit the Green Room from 22 September – 3 October for Acts of Transfer, a collaboration between artist Katy Beinart and writer Lizzie Lloyd.
